Summary:

The Endoscopy Nurse is a registered nurse directly responsible for patient care during endoscopy procedures. This role requires a holistic approach to patient care through preparing the patients, including conducting the preoperative assessment, educating the patients about the procedure process, addressing any concerns to ensure a seamless transition, delivering care during the intraoperative period, and recovering patients post-anesthesia. The nurse uses a collaborative approach to enhance communication and evaluate ongoing care with the anesthesiologist and provider. The nurse is responsible for delivering and documenting patient care during the procedure while adhering to perioperative nursing policies, procedures, and standards. The nurse also requires critical thinking skills that ensure patient safety and allow the patient to recover effectively post-anesthesia. As a patient advocate, the nurse thoroughly reinforces procedure-specific discharge instructions and education given to patients, families, and/or significant others.


Responsibilities:

Prepares patients for procedures by performing physical assessments, to include, vital signs and body measurements. Reviews and performs patient specific ordered tests and administers medications. Obtains patients medical history, allergies, current medications that assist in determining patient risk in undergoing endoscopic procedure. Documents data in patient’s medical record for legal and medical reference and to ensure safe procedure outcomes.

Collaborates with procedure teams to verify procedure details, identify special equipment or materials needed, and address patient specific concerns while also maintaining the preoperative area to ensure it is clean, organized, and well-stocked, complying with health regulations.

Sets up and prepares the surgical suite by assembling necessary equipment and supplies.

Positions patients based on procedure and performs a "Procedure Time Out" to confirm the procedure and assist anesthesiologist and endoscopy technician with other duties.

Conducts and document procedure in EMR and handles specimens according to proper procedure.

Cleans and organizes the surgical suite post procedure, including the proper disposal of used supplies and ensures proper charges done.

Uses supplies efficiently and conservatively to maintain fiscal responsibility.

Plays vital role in ensuring a safe and comfortable recovery for patients in recovery phase II, by

observing, monitoring post procedure patients’ levels of consciousness, measuring and recording vital signs to assess patients’ recovery progress from anesthesia. 

 Observes for and addresses any sign of side effects from anesthesia medications. Manages and treats post procedure symptoms, including pain and nausea.

Collaborates with the medical team to coordinate post procedure care and facilitate timely specialized interventions such as follow up appointments.

Provides comfort and reassurance to patients and their families, addressing any concerns and answering questions. Educates patients and their families about post procedure care and discharge instructions.
