Summary:

The Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Nurse works in hospitals to prepare patients for surgery. As a PAT Nurse, you are responsible for overseeing patient intake, performing initial physical assessments, and obtaining comprehensive medical histories to optimize patients for anesthesia. Duties include conducting required tests, such as EKGs, drawing blood for lab work, and providing patients with detailed information about their surgical procedures. You will also address patient questions and discuss post-surgical care plans.


Responsibilities:

The PAT Nurse plays a crucial role in ensuring patients are well-prepared and informed before surgery, contributing to the overall success and safety of the surgical process. Conducts thorough assessments of patients scheduled for surgical or invasive procedures requiring anesthesia, evaluating their physical and emotional readiness.

Reviews patients’ medical histories, including pre-existing conditions, allergies, medications, and previous surgeries, to identify potential risks or complications.

Coordinates and performs diagnostic tests such as blood work, ECGs, and X-rays as required to ensure patients are medically fit for their procedures, adhering to Perioperative Testing Guidelines.

Assesses and documents current medications, including dosage and frequency, and make recommendations for necessary adjustments or changes in consultation with physicians.

Provides detailed information to patients and their families about the upcoming procedure, including expectations, preoperative instructions, and potential risks.

Works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for each patient.

Maintains accurate and comprehensive patient records, including preoperative assessments, test results, and communication with the healthcare team.

Adheres to strict infection control protocols and screen patients for contagious illnesses to minimize the risk of surgical site infections. Monitors and addresses safety concerns related to the patient’s condition, such as allergies, fall risk, or other vulnerabilities.
