Summary:

The Monitor Technician partners with team members to meet the needs of the customer and the patient care area, and registers patients for admissions into assigned area. The Monitor Tech performs a variety of basic clerical tasks such as answering phone, transferring patients, monitoring telemetry rhythms, and patient status. This individual communicates clearly and effectively through established systems, concerning relevant information with customers and co-workers. The Monitor Tech demonstrates sensitivity in dealing with the special needs of specific age groups, patient population with various deadlines, and supports other departments as needed to coordinate various patient services.


Responsibilities:

Monitors cardiac rhythms to include running monitor strips as required by unit standards and as needed according to patient condition, documenting rhythm information at specified frequencies, posting rhythm strips with appropriate patient identifiers as specified through workflows and scanning rhythm strips into the health record to ensure accurate and timely information to ensure safe patient care. Cleans and maintains the basic operating functions for transmitters and ensures that broken and/or lost devices are immediately communicated to Bio-Med, Director and Charge Nurse and reports immediately aberrant rhythms or rhythm changes to the Registered Nurse caring for the patients evidenced by documentation. Responds to codes timely and according to policy standards.

Communicates effectively supporting the needs of the patient and the unit. Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with all patients, visitors and staff, acts as a unit receptionist greeting, and directing visitors, physicians or staff unaccustomed to their unit. The Monitor Tech answers phones in clear, professional manner ensuring all calls are directed to appropriate persons in a timely manner, and provides telephone services by giving information, paging returning calls, contacting outside entities as directed, communicates clearly, and effectively (verbally, electronically, or in writing) all relevant and pertinent information to appropriate persons.

Serves as an important link in the communication chain ensuring information is transmitted between nursing and hospital team, physicians, patients, family members and other guests. Reports all information to ensure timely completion of tasks to oncoming shift Monitor Tech and others as needed i.e.: scanning and indexing medical documents, supply and nourishment orders etc.; answers call lights from desk promptly and efficiently; directs questions and problems to appropriate person, recognizing the need to seek assistance when necessary; maintains "Unit Staff Assignment" on the intranet and updates as necessary; demonstrates behaviors that incorporate YRMC's values.

Ensures completion of registration paperwork, COA etc. for identified areas as directed; identifies medical record documents, scan, index, perform quality review and storage of scanned documents as directed; performs a Quantitative/Qualitative review of Inpatient and Outpatient records on a daily basis to ensure all documentation is present and signed by the appropriate healthcare provider or patient; enters all appropriate information into computer system within required time frames to ensure proper processing of patient records and accounts.

Participates in QA activities by performing chart or other audits as necessary to ensure a complete and concise medical record for the patient; notifies ancillary department(s) of need for patient services in a timely and appropriate manner; determines the paperwork needed to accompany the patients and to make sure all is ready in timely manner; i.e. transfers; interviews patients at the request of nursing staff or director to obtain and complete necessary forms such as birth certificates, living wills, organ donations, consents, and notarized documents.

Communicates bed placement issues; coordinates patient assignment with nursing staff in cooperation with Charge Nurse and/or House Resource Supervisor; completes any patient communication, such as thank you cards, and mails as appropriate upon discharge.

Coordinates Bio-Med and Maintenance work orders to ensure completion; including ordering of supplies and equipment for patient care and staff and ensures that necessary supplies are available in each designated area.

Operates and assists others with equipment in safe and efficient manner; i.e.; telephones, paging system, fax, printer, copier, tube system, laser labeler, Chartmaxx, and other related items. Maintains any departmental logs and outlined by department.
