Summary:
This position is responsible for the collection, receipt, processing and transport of biological specimens into the laboratory while adhering to standards of practice and universal precautions at all times. The Laboratory Technical Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Testing Program Supervisor to provide lab support by performing registrations, clerical duties, waived testing, and other duties as assigned. This position collaborates with all members of the health care team to provide quality service to our customers.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates respect and regard for all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Acts as a receptionist, greets patients, and answer telephones inquiries. Show commitment to patients by performing appropriate collections, testing, education and providing informational support. Positively identifies each patient by soliciting the patient’s full name and date of birth, at a minimum or by other acceptable identification defined by laboratory policy. Compares the patients given information against the armband (if applicable), medical record and each requisition sheet before any procedure is performed. Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary methods for all age groups. Demonstrates competency with all phlebotomy equipment (i.e., Butterflies, syringes, needle device, lancet, transfer devices, etc.). Consistently performs blood collections using established laboratory procedures (i.e., proper patient identification, proper tube selection, etc.). Properly identifies and labels specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures. Maintains acceptable specimen rejection rates. Properly utilizes laboratory information system (LIS) to enter laboratory orders for outpatients, nursing homes, outside providers, etc. Verifies that orders are correctly transcribed, and resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders or order discrepancies. Receives, processes, prepares and stabilizes specimens for both hospital laboratory testing and referral laboratory testing in a timely manner. Assumes responsibility and appropriately follows through on reference laboratory send out specimens. Focuses on quality by ensuring that all work performed is accurate, complete and performed within the time frames defined by the department. Tracks, locates and investigates any delayed or missing specimens. Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures. Follows established methods and practices and demonstrates basic problem solving skills. Meets department standards for productivity and quality. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by adhering to organizational policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and professional standards. Demonstrates awareness and complies with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements related to their area of responsibility. Transports specimens and supplies to and from surrounding locations using department vehicles. Maintains YRMC fleet safety clearance and performs basic maintenance checks on laboratory vehicles. Participates in departmental financial responsibilities through the appropriate use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Maintains inventory, ordering, and ensuring phlebotomy supplies are adequate and are within expiration date. Participates in department initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Communicates effectively, courteously and professionally with internal and external customers. Interacts with coworkers with an emphasis on teamwork and a focus on customer service. All employees must be able to work all areas, departments, and shifts as assigned. Attends meetings and remains current with internal and external communications (i.e. e-mail, newsletters, etc.). Acknowledges and understands the importance of 'Patient Rights' and privacy (HIPAA). Promotes, supports and exhibits behavior consistent with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Yuma Regional Medical Center. Completes core competencies, organizational and departmental assignments and/or requirements on time. Performs other duties as assigned defined.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors: Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Use material handling equipment to push/and or pull up to 75 pounds and required to lift, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity. Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical, electrical and biological hazards. Ability to distinguish colors and to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly. Requires use of personal computer, printers, copiers, telephone, fax and department specific equipment. Minimum Qualifications: Minimum age requirement of 18. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have clean driving record. Must exhibit personal maturity and responsibility. Good oral communication, reading, writing and math abilities are required. Must demonstrate comprehension in both oral and written formats. Ability to perform detailed work, work with frequent interruptions, multi-task, problem solve and memorization, Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly. Good organizational skills are also required. Basic computer skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications: One-year clinical laboratory experience or successful completion of approved phlebotomy and/or laboratory assistant program preferred. Moderate computer knowledge including MS office. Excellent Phlebotomy skills including bariatric and pediatric patient populations. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. ASCP or AMT certification as Phlebotomist.
