Summary:

A hemodialysis technician extern contributes to the healthcare team by working under the licensed nurse to provide safe and effective treatment to patients living with kidney disease. The extern provides patient care in accordance with policy, procedures, and training. The extern is expected to set-up, operate and complete maintenance of dialysis machines.

Responsibilities:

Adheres to infection control protocols, including the sterilization of equipment and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Is attentive to patient needs, providing compassionate care that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of patient well-being. This includes welcoming the patient into the dialysis unit and participating in their treatment from start to finish.

Monitors the patient’s vital signs to ensure treatment is progressing safely and effectively and documents accurately and timely in patients’ medical record.

Reports to the nursing staff any concerns identified during treatment and responds promptly and effectively to emergency situations in the dialysis unit. Works closely with providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care.

Responds to emergencies and provide appropriate interventions, including initiating emergency procedures if necessary.

Contributes to seamless department operations by ensuring adequate supply levels and equipment management.

Credentials:
Essential:
* BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)

Education:
Essential:
* HS DIPLOMA/GED

Other information:

High school diploma or GED. Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association (AHA).

Licensed Nursing Assistant or Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) or Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician Advanced (CCHT-A).

***Must achieve Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) within 6 months or certification from a dialysis technician program in accordance with Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) and state requirements within 18 months of hire (with subsequent promotion to Hemodialysis Technician position.

Preferred: Dialysis Technician experience.
